The Golden Stag Beetle (Odontolabis cuvera) is a large, striking lucanid found in Nepal’s mid-hill and low-montane forests at elevations ranging from 500 to 1,500 meters. Males can reach roughly 43–90 mm (mandibles included) and sport long, powerful jaws used in contests over sap and mates, while females are smaller and lack the exaggerated mandibles, a clear example of sexual dimorphism.

Its glossy black body is set off by broad golden–orange margins along the elytra, which give the species its common name. Larvae develop for one to several years inside decaying hardwood logs, where they help break down wood and recycle nutrients in mature forest ecosystems.
