The Gray-breasted Prinia is a small, active songbird commonly found in scrublands, forest edges, grasslands, and cultivated areas at elevations of 75–1200 meters across the lowlands and lower hills of Nepal. It is easily recognized by its white throat, distinct gray breast band, smoky gray upperparts during the breeding season, and long graduated tail with white-tipped feathers that is often held upright.

The bird also has a short black bill, pinkish legs, and a noticeable orange eye-ring. Outside the breeding season, its plumage becomes browner with warm rufous tones on the wings, helping it blend into dry vegetation. It feeds mainly on insects and is often seen moving restlessly through shrubs while giving its lively, high-pitched calls.
