The Greater Coucal is found at elevations ranging from 75m to 365m above sea level. The adults have a glossy black and purple head, body, and a long, dark green tail, along with chestnut brown wings. Their eyes are deep red, and they have a strong, blackish bill and dark grey legs.

They prefer lush habitats such as wetlands, marshes, and forest edges, and their diet consists of insects, caterpillars, snails, and small vertebrates.
