Yellow Bittern is found in elevations below 250m in marshy areas with plenty of vegetation. The male Yellow Bittern sports a sunny yellow coat with a chestnut head and black cap, while females and juveniles wear camouflage of brown streaks and mottling.

Both adults and young enjoy a varied diet of insects, fish, and amphibians. While typically silent, they might give a startling call if surprised.
