Family: Nymphalidae

Location: Kawasoti, Nawalparasi, Nepal

The Peacock Pansy (Junonia almana) is one of Nepal’s most familiar and widespread butterflies, commonly seen at elevations ranging from 400 to 2,042 meters. This resilient species thrives in open habitats such as grassy clearings, roadside verges, gardens, and cultivated areas.

Adults display a bright orange-brown background on the upperside of their wings, adorned with distinctive, eye-like ocelli near the wing tips—one large and vibrant on each forewing, and two smaller ones on the hindwings. When at rest or in flight, the underside reveals muted shades of grey and brown with subtle patterning, providing effective camouflage from predators.
