The Chestnut Thrush is a modestly sized thrush found at elevations between 915 and 2,745 meters. It is a winter visitor and not abundant in Nepal.

In appearance, it is easily recognized by its gray head, black wings, and warm orange-brown back, creating a striking tri-color pattern. The underparts often match the back’s chestnut hue. Males and females share similar plumage, though females may appear slightly duller.

This species prefers montane forests and wooded foothills, where it forages in the undergrowth and leaf litter for insects and small invertebrates. Because it winters at lower elevations and is relatively scarce, it remains a noteworthy sighting for birdwatchers in Nepal.
