The Black-winged Kite is a small raptor commonly found in Nepal’s lowland regions, particularly in open grasslands, agricultural fields, and scrublands, at elevations ranging from 75 to 300 meters. Spotted also at an elevation of around 1335m (ie. Bungamati, Kathmandu valley) in February.
This bird is easily recognizable by its striking plumage: a predominantly white and pale gray body, accented with bold black patches on the shoulders and wing tips. Its long, pointed wings extend beyond a short, square tail when perched. A notable feature is its forward-facing red eyes, giving it an owl-like appearance.
The Black-winged Kite is known for its hovering flight while hunting, similar to kestrels. It primarily feeds on small mammals, insects, and reptiles, making it a beneficial presence for controlling pest populations in agricultural areas.
