The Butterfly Pea is a delicate, twining climber commonly found in the warm, lowland regions of Nepal, typically occurring at elevations of up to 1,500 meters above sea level. Often grown along fences, forest edges, and gardens, it is both a wild and cultivated species, valued for its striking flowers and ecological role.

Its most distinctive feature is the vivid, deep blue flower, occasionally seen in white forms, with a soft, velvety texture. The blossom has a characteristic funnel or conch-like shape, with a single broad, rounded petal marked by a pale yellow or whitish throat at the center. The leaves are pinnate, composed of several small, oval leaflets arranged symmetrically along a slender stem, giving the plant a light, feathery appearance.
