Common Selfheal is a low-growing perennial herb of the mint family found in Nepal’s temperate regions, ranging in elevations of around 1,500–3,200 metres. It grows in grassy meadows, open slopes, forest edges, and along trails, where its creeping square stems gradually form small patches. The opposite leaves are oval to lance-shaped, green, and may have slightly toothed margins.

The plant is recognized by its dense, terminal flower spikes made up of small tubular blossoms that are typically violet to deep purple, though pink or white forms occasionally occur. Each flower has a hood-like upper lip and a three-lobed lower lip, giving it a distinctive appearance. It blooms during the warmer months and attracts a variety of bees and butterflies.
