Common Tiger butterfly is found in elevation ranging from 120m to 2650m in and around gardens, open country, scrub jungles, dry, or moist deciduous forests.

Both the male and the female are similar in color with tawny wings that have veins marked with distinctive broad black bands. The margins in the wing are black in color that has two rows of white spots. The underside of the wing is similarly marked but paler in comparison to the upper side with the forewing being a bit darker. The male has a prominent lower discal spot on the hind wing.

The common Tiger butterfly is also known as the striped tiger to differentiate it from the Plain Tiger Butterfly.
