The Great Crested Grebe is a striking waterbird found at elevations between 75 and 3,050 meters. It is primarily a winter visitor, appearing in lowland and mid-hill waters between November and March.
In non-breeding plumage, this grebe appears paler than most of its relatives; its face is noticeably whiter above the eye, highlighting its fine pink bill. This lighter coloration gives it an elegant, clean look during the off-season.
During the breeding season, the grebe undergoes a dramatic transformation. Its face develops rich tawny cheek patches, and it grows distinctive black crests that frame its elegant head. Its sleek body and ornate head feathers make it a captivating sight on calm waters.
Although globally listed as Least Concern, the Great Crested Grebe still depends on clean, undisturbed habitats to thrive.
