The male has deep slate-blue feathers and a reddish tail, while the female is more modestly colored, featuring greyish-brown plumage and a lighter underside.
These birds are often seen perched on rocks or darting near the water’s edge, displaying their characteristic tail-flicking behavior. Their diet primarily consists of insects, which they catch mid-air or by foraging along the shoreline.
