Common Name: Wallcreeper
Scientific Name: Tichodroma muraria
Family: Tichodromidae
Nepali Name: Murari Putalichara ( मुरारी पुतलीचरा )
Size: 16 cm
Location: Bhimdhunga; Gabar Valley, Banke; Ichangu.
The Wallcreeper is one striking and unmistakable bird, often likened to a butterfly in flight as it flutters against sheer rock faces. Medium-sized and compact, it has a slender, slightly downcurved bill adapted for probing into crevices. Its overall plumage appears ashy-grey, blending seamlessly with cliffs and stone walls, but this subtle camouflage is dramatically broken in flight by broad, rounded wings splashed with deep crimson, black, and white spots.
In Nepal, the species is found across a wide elevational range, from around 245 m to as high as 5,000 m, moving seasonally between lower cliffs in winter and high-altitude rocky habitats during the breeding season. It inhabits vertical landscapes; gorges, cliffs, boulder fields, where it methodically creeps along surfaces in short hops, probing for insects and spiders.
