The Striated Heron is compact and quietly elegant and is found in the lowland to mid-hills of Nepal, from around 75 to 915 metres in elevation. It favours the gentle margins of streams, ponds, rivers, and marshes where dense vegetation or overhanging branches provide shady cover.

Its plumage is slate-grey on the back, a dark cap and a crisp white throat, with short yellow legs. The bird often stands motionless at the water’s edge, eyes fixed and body poised, ready to spear small fish, frogs, or aquatic insects.
