The Greater Yellownape is a large and striking woodpecker commonly found in forested landscapes at elevations ranging from 150 – 915 m.

It is predominantly dark olive green, with contrasting greyish underparts that give it a robust appearance. The most distinctive feature is its bright yellow nape and throat, forming a prominent crest that stands out against the darker body. The crown appears brownish, while the flight feathers are chestnut in colour, boldly barred with black.

Its strong bill often looks pale or whitish, adding to its unique profile. This visually impressive species is an important indicator of healthy, mature forests.
